Customer hurls verbal abuse at cashier with Down syndrome—but then, enraged onlookers step in

Tolerance is one great virtue—one that not everyone cherishes unfortunately, thereby leading to some unnecessary conflicts.

Peter, a cashier at a Kilroys’ store who has Down syndrome, had been working diligently, trying to pack groceries as fast as possible for his customers, when one of them verbally abused him out of the blue, as captured by cameras in the store that day.

“This might take awhile [as] we are in the retarded line. Oh no, I don’t think so. Look how slow he is going,” a male customer tells a female customer behind him as they wait to pay for their items.

“Leave him alone, that’s not nice,” the woman tells the man with a disgusted look.

“I’m telling you I’m really sorry, ma’am. I work faster for you,” Peter tells the woman.

After asking Peter for his name, the woman turns around to see several people approach her, including John Quinones, host of “What Would You Do?”

Quinones and his crew had just acted out the earlier scene to observe how people would react upon witnessing a person with Down syndrome get bulled.

When asked why she reacted that way, she explained that it’s just wrong that people are victimized and picked on like that.

The woman was not the only one who was enraged to witness Peter being abused. The episode, which was uploaded to YouTube in 2016, shows more customers stand up to defend Peter; one of them even gives the cashier a hug.

It was the last customer, however, that impressed the crew the most with her response.

The lady, Caroline, overhears a female customer hurling abuse at Peter, and she’s enraged.

She shouts from the aisle, “I’m very offended by you!

“I’m very offended by you to call that boy out like that here in front of everybody.”

She later explains to Quinones that at Kilroys, the store employs people with “some challenges,” and “it’s such a wonderful thing that that’s a part of your experience when you come here.” Thus it’s “unacceptable” to her to see Peter being bullied.

Caroline later gives Peter a warm hug.
