Graphic footage shows lioness’s flank ripped off—watch the mighty mom stand up after surgery

This video shows an 11-year-old lioness named Siena that was severely injured by a male buffalo. But her will to live was miraculous.

The lioness belongs to the Marsh Pride in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya. The injury caused by the bull’s horn gorging into her left flank ripped off her skin, leaving a massive gaping wound. The severe wound had almost exposed her hip bone and would have led to her certain death, unless she was treated in time.

Staff at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and a veterinary surgeon, Dr. Njoroge, were dispatched to the scene. After being tranquilized, Siena was medically treated in a race against time. The team performed a life-saving operation to stitch her ripped-off skin, and then applied special green clay to her wound to accelerate the healing.

Watch the brave lioness get up after her operation and walk back to her three little cubs!
