I was born in 1950 into a wealthy and influential Vietnamese family. Following a happy childhood, I became a flight attendant, got married, and had two healthy sons. I was rich, considered beautiful, and my life was blessed in many ways, despite various ups and downs.
I was also very lucky, having escaped death a number of times in seemingly miraculous ways. But later in life, after I discovered an amazing life-enhancing practice that healed my debilitating health problems, I came to realize that luck may have had nothing to do with it.
Dodging the Hand of Death
When I was 19, I was at a friend’s birthday party when some robbers barged in and started shooting. I got hit and crawled under a table to hide. After the intruders fled, people found me by following the scent of blood. I survived and eventually recovered from the gunshot wound.
In 1972, during the Vietnam War, there were two major battles in Quang Tri, in the north central coastal region of Vietnam. Much of the second battle was fought in the air and several helicopters were damaged or shot down. I flew constantly during that time but the planes I was on always escaped unscathed.
In 1973, a plane I was working on crashed, killing everyone on board except me and another flight attendant. When the plane crashed, somehow I fell out and got entangled in a bush. That’s what saved my life.
One of my biggest ordeals came in the mid-1980s when I was arrested and detained over the disappearance of my neighbor’s housemaid. My neighbor had reported me to the police, accusing me of having been responsible for the housemaid’s disappearance. Three months later, the housemaid was found and I was released.
Plagued with Health Problems
I struggled with asthma for many years. Then in 2013, my asthma was compounded by the onset of other serious illnesses, such as chronic gastrointestinal disorders, disk herniation, leg pain, severe arthritis, and heart problems.
My doctor recommended that I go to France for heart surgery, but I didn’t feel strong enough to travel, plus there was no guarantee the surgery would be successful. I continued taking very expensive prescription medication.
My husband is a lecturer at a university medical school in Ho Chi Minh City and my two sons are doctors, one in California and one in Ho Chi Minh City, yet none of them could help me.
Traffic Jam Leads to a Profound Turnaround
Relief came in a most unexpected and profound way.
It happened that one afternoon in May 2016, I got stuck in a traffic jam during rush hour while my son was rushing me to the doctor’s office because I was in severe pain.
Then my son suggested stopping at a nearby park where he had seen people doing some qigong exercises called Falun Dafa, also called Falun Gong. He said he had read in a newspaper about people who followed this practice who had their diseases cured without using drugs. I had no other option given how long it would take us to get to the doctor’s office, so I followed his advice.
I joined in the exercises the people at the park were doing, following along with the movements as best I could. Although I was clumsy and didn’t do them very well, surprisingly I began to feel better. I decided not to go to the doctor that day.
The next day, my son took me to the park again. This time I was able to sit in the half-lotus position for the meditation. This was very surprising because I used to visit a temple and participated in the chanting while sitting cross-legged, but I experienced a lot of pain whenever I tried sitting in the full or half lotus position.
Curious and excited, I decided I should find out more about Falun Dafa. I learned from talking to the practitioners at the park that this was an ancient, traditional practice from China that was made public in 1992 and subsequently spread around the world.
Soon after, I attended a workshop on Falun Dafa, which involved watching a series of lectures by the founder, Mr. Li Honzghi, one each day for nine days. It was during this time that the miracle happened: I felt healthy, my body felt light, and I felt happy and at peace.
With continued reading of the book Zhuan Falun and following its teachings of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, dramatic changes began to take place. Soon after, it seemed all of my illnesses had disappeared. I stopped taking all of my expensive medications right away. I knew I no longer needed them.
My friends and neighbors were amazed at the changes in me, not to mention my husband. “This phenomenon cannot be explained by medical science,” he said.
Friend’s Broken Heart Mended, Bitter Resentment Dissolved
Now that I was once again living a healthy and productive life, I wanted to help my friend, Bao Anh, who was also a flight attendant. Her problem, however, wasn’t related to her health; she was suffering from a broken heart and had been for years.
Her story is very interesting. Back in the early 1970s, Bao Anh married the love of her life. He was a colonel in the army, and in 1975, due to the political situation, he went missing. Bao Anh didn’t know whether he was alive or dead—she could find out no information about him.
She was two months pregnant at the time, and seven months later gave birth to twin boys. She raised the boys on her own, waiting and hoping for her husband to come back. After 11 years passed without receiving any news from him, she remarried. However, there was a caveat: If her first husband ever returned, she would go back to him. Her new husband agreed to this.
Two years after they married, the couple rented a house and discovered that the owner of the house was in fact Bao Anh’s previous husband! He had also remarried.
After finally finding her long lost love after 13 years, Bao Anh wanted to talk with him, but he did not want to listen to any of her explanations and flatly refused to meet with her. He even denigrated her and slandered her.
Bao Anh’s heart was shattered. On the one hand, she couldn’t help but recall what he was like as her beautiful first love and how happy she had been as his wife. On the other hand, her resentment grew day by day. In her pain and anguish, she couldn’t bring herself to tell him about their two children.
Bao Anh’s first husband soon moved to the United States, never knowing that he was the father of twin boys.
In despair, Bao Anh often consulted fortune tellers to see whether it was in the cards that she and her first husband would have a chance to be together again. She also went to pray in temples and churches, wishing to forget what had happened but at the same time longing for the old days.
Then in a state of depression and bitterness, she left her second husband.
To add to her sorrow, her sons often blamed her for remarrying and not waiting longer for their father to return. Tragically, one of the twins died at age 15. While ill prior to his death, he said he would go live with his dad if his dad ever came back. Those words pierced Bao Anh’s heart like a sword.
‘I forgive him’
For years, I wanted to help Bao Anh let go of her grudges and get over her broken heart, but I didn’t know how.
However, once I learned Falun Dafa and personally experienced its benefits and how it transformed me, I felt there was hope for my old friend, whom I had always thought of as a younger sister. After repeatedly reading the part of Zhuan Falun that talks about how tolerance and compassion have the power of dissolving hatred and resentment, I decided to give the book to Bao Anh.
The next time we met, she told me that after reading Zhuan Falun four times, she was able to let go of her negative feelings toward her first husband.
“I forgive him. I don’t hate him any more. I can forget about him now,” she said. “What’s the use of holding grudges?”
Bao Anh went on to say that through reading the book and following the teachings of Falun Dafa, she found her heart soothed, as if the burden she had been carrying for so many years had been taken away.
Her other son had moved to the United States by this time, still carrying anger and blame in his heart that his father never came back and that his mother remarried. Bao Anh told him about her experience practicing Falun Dafa, and on her advice he, too, began to read Zhuan Falun. As a result, anger lifted from his heart as well, and he was able to forgive both his father and mother.
I have no words to describe how grateful I am that Falun Dafa came into my life and that of Bao Anh. Reading Zhuan Falun and doing the gentle, meditative exercises have become an essential part of my daily life. It’s what keeps me healthy, in a peaceful state of mind, and with a sense of happiness that is immeasurable.
I share our stories here in hopes that others can also benefit from our experiences and the blessings that Falun Dafa has to offer.
